Welcome
to our Featured Tequila page. This page will be revised periodically
to feature a different brand of Tequila.
Our
current "featured tequila" is: Lagrimas de Valle, La Loma Ranch Plata and Reposado
Lagrimas de Valle Tequila is produced at Cascahuin Distillery, NOM 1123, in the town of El Arenal, Jalisco. "La Loma" is the fourth release Lagrimas de Valle has produced in partenership with the Rosales family (NOM 1123). Each release is designed to highlight the impacts of terroir (of a given agave ranch selection). "La Loma" is the first from Lagrimas using agave from the state of Michoacán.
In 2023, Lagrimas introduced their first batch, "Palo Verde", using agaves harvested in 2022. Also, in 2022 agaves from "El Chiqueño" were harvested and distilled, which was later released in 2024. Both the "Palo Verde" and "El Chiqueño" came from side-by-side fields in Jalisco. In 2024, the "El Sabino" Ranch expression was released also using agaves from Jalisco. The agave used had an average Brix Level of over 40, very ripe and sweet!
However, a change in terroir, "La Loma" Ranch uses agaves from Villamar, Michoacan at an elevation of roughly 5068 Feet, with an average Brix of 38%. The agaves (selected by Don Salvador Rosales Torresare) are split and the cogollo is removed before slow cooking in Cascahuin’s Stone/Brick Ovens. Once cooled, the cooked agaves are macerated by both Tahona and Roller Mills. Deep well water is added during this process. Natural open-air fermentation is done using wood and stainless fermentation tanks, with and without agave fibers being added. Double-distillation is performed using stainless pot stills with copper coils. The spirit is bottled at 46 ABV / 92 proof.
Tequila Connection completed our review of Lagrimas de Valle "La Loma" Tequilas on 14 July 2025. All tasting was performed using the official tequila glass from Riedel with the spirit served at room temperature.
La Loma Plata has a crystal-clear appearance with a medium-oil consistency. Nice legs on the glass as expected. The aroma was lighter than anticipated, but with floral and fruity (melon) notes shining. Also on the nose we detected alcohol, light agave, citrus and herbal tones. Upon tasting, we get the sweet cooked agave, herbal, some minerality, with light tobacco and sasperella notes. The finish was slightly dry (due to the higher proof), peppery and included some effervescence. The Plata received an average score of 86.5, and a Great + rating.
La Loma Reposado, also 46% ABV, has a Rhine wine appearance and a medium oily body. It is lighter looking than many reposados. Understandable, as it spends only 3 months in bourbon barrels. Aromas detected: Light citrus, floral, mineral, and agave. Aromas again were lighter than expected. Upon tasting, we were pleased with the fruity sweetness, (orange), cooked agave, herbal (minty), spice (cinnamon) and vegital (jalapeno) flavors. The finish is pleasant with some pepper and bitter tannin notes. It dries, but lingers on for a good length of time. We (4 tasters) liked the reposado a bit more and gave it a score of 87.25 (also converts to a rating of Great +).
Nice job to Lagrimas and Cascahuin from another solid release!
